MLB insider: Pirates have “no intention” of trading Paul Skenes at deadline

Lots of rumors surround one of the best pitchers in the MLB, Paul Skenes. Even rumors involving a possible breakup with his griflfriend Livvy Dunne, but that’s for another section. As the MLB trade deadline nears, talks have swirled about which high-impact players might be on the move. But fans hoping for a blockbuster involving Pittsburgh’s phenom can now put those dreams to rest. According to ESPN insider Jeff Passan, the Pirates have “no intention” of trading Skenes before the July 30 trase deadline.

Passan’s report firmly shuts down speculation that the right-handed pitcher, who’s quickly become one of baseball’s most electric arms, could be moved as part of a rebuild or retooling effort. “The Pirates are building around him”, Passan noted, making it clear that the organization sees Skenes as a franchise cornerstone rather than a trade chip.

Paul Skenes, face of the Pittsburgh Pirates

Since making his MLB debut last season, Paul Skenes has lived up to the hype and more. The former LSU star has consistentlty dazzled on the mound, combining thriple-digit velocity with elite strikeout stuff and poise beyond his years. He’s not only the Pirates’ best pitcher, but one of the most exciting young talents in the game today.

With Pittsburgh striving to hover around a .500 win percentage and get close to Wild Card contention, trading a young ace under team control would’ve sent the wrong message to fans and players alike. By holding onto Skenes, the Pirates are showing that they’re serious about competing now and in the future.

Pirates and Skenes looking to turn situations around

For years, the Pirates have been known more for trading away star talent than keeping it. From Gerrit Cole to Andrew McCutchen, the franchise has often prioritized long-term assets over short-term results. Keeping Skenes marks a shift in approach, one that suggest Pittsburgh is ready to build around its homegrown stars rather than ship them out.

With Skenes, Mitch Keller, and top prospect Temarr Johnson forming the foundation, the Pirates appear to be setting up for sustainable success. Refusing to entertain offers for Skenes sends a strong message to the rest of the league: Pittsburgh isn’t selling, they’re investing.

Paul Skenes’s numbers in 2025

  • WAR: 4.8, 1st in MLB
  • ERA: 1.94, 2nd in MLB
  • Record: 4-7
  • WHIP: .922, 6th in MLB
