MLB could be facing a major problem with sports betting

More than knowing which teams will reach the World Series, who won the All-Star Game or remembering the top figure of the Home Run Derby, the issue of MLB that is taking more relevance at the moment is the investigation under which a couple of players are under for possibly being related to sports betting.

If anyone thinks that the balls or strikes a pitcher throws when games are already decided are unimportant, they are completely wrong. That’s what the case that’s being talked about so much in Major League Baseball is all about. Some players may have been deliberately pitching badly to make money at the betting houses.

Two Guardians players under investigation for sports betting

MLB has placed Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase on paid administrative leave as part of its investigation into sports betting. The announcement comes after a similar move against starting pitcher Luis Ortiz, representing the second such case involving a Cleveland pitcher this summer.

MLB said in a statement that Clase will remain out until August 31, under an agreement with the MLB Players Association, while the league continues its investigation. “We will have no further comment until the investigation is concluded,” the league said.

MLB analyzes 22 suspicious pitches from Emmanuel Clase

A video compilation shows that on 22 occasions Clase began his performance in the inning with a ball, and not just any ball outside the zone, but wild pitches that did not even reach the catcher’s glove. The Guardians explained that they are aware of the possible penalties.

To date, Clase’s performance amounts to a 5-3 record with 24 saves in 48 appearances (47.1 innings of work) and an ERA of 3.23. Ortiz, on the other hand, has a disastrous 4-9 record in 16 starts, with an ERA of 4.36.
