MLB analyst warns Yankees that their latest move is a colossal mistake that will ruin their 2026

The New York Yankees sparked the debate in Major League Baseball after Trent Grisham decision to accept the $22.025 million qualifying offer, a figure that quadruples his 2025 salary and guarantees him another year in the Bronx.

Although the outfielder is coming off a solid season in terms of power, his offensive inconsistency and his role within the team raise questions as to whether it was the best decision for the organization.

Grisham had the best year of his career in terms of power production: 34 home runs and 74 RBIs in 116 hits. However, his .235 average continues to be a weak point that many executives saw as a factor that would push him to test free agency. Against all odds, the outfielder chose to secure the offer and remain with the Yankees.

Brandon Tierney criticizes

WFAN Sports Radio journalist Brandon Tierney was one of the first to openly question the Yankees’ decision. For the insider, the move could mark the start of a “horrendous offseason”.

“The Yankees made a colossal mistake. This could be the first domino towards a terrible offseason,” Tierney said, indicating that “Grisham does not fit into the salary or sporting structure that New York” needs to compete at the highest level.

Yankees limit options with Cody Bellinger

Grisham’s stay directly impacts the team’s strategy, as it reduces the possibility of presenting a mega-offer for Cody Bellinger, one of the franchise’s priority targets. The former MVP is coming off a consistent year: .272 average, 29 home runs and 98 RBIs.

In addition, this move could also block the growth of youngsters such as Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones, prospects the club wants to develop and who have been waiting for their chance in the lineup.

Trent Grisham and his defensive performance questioned

Although Grisham played 124 games in center field, his defensive performance dropped dramatically. The two-time Gold Glove winner finished the year with –11 Defensive Runs Saved and -3 Fielding Run Value, figures that contrast strongly with the contribution that Bellinger could offer, who maintains a more balanced performance between offense and defense.

Brian Cashman supports the decision

General manager Brian Cashman was clear in justifying the qualifying offer: Grisham was, for them, a valuable piece in the structure of the team. The outfielder was one of the few players who accepted the deal, which Cashman interprets as a commitment to the upcoming campaign.

The decision has been made, but the controversy continues. The Yankees are betting on stability, while analysts and fans wonder if this move will cost them more than they are willing to admit.
