MLB All Star Game 2026 Starting Pitchers: Who will be starting the All-Star game today for each team?

The 2026 MLB All-Star Game will begin with a fitting contrast with one pitcher taking the mound in front of his home crowd, the other arriving as one of the most overpowering arms in the American League.

Cristopher Sanchez will start for the National League at Citizens Bank Park, giving the Philadelphia Phillies ace a rare opportunity to open the Midsummer Classic in his own stadium.

The American League will counter with Dylan Cease, whose first season with the Toronto Blue Jays has quickly justified the club’s major offseason investment. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

Both pitchers earned the assignment through dominant first halves. Sanchez entered the break among the major-league leaders in ERA, strikeouts and pitching value, while Cease combined elite velocity with one of the strongest swing-and-miss profiles in baseball.

Sanchez earns rare hometown start

The decision gives Sanchez one of the most meaningful honors of his career.

The left-hander established himself as a dependable member of the Phillies’ rotation in 2023 before developing into a true ace over the next several seasons. He finished second in National League Cy Young voting in 2025 and continued that form into 2026.

Sanchez entered the All-Star break with a 2.62 ERA and 144 strikeouts, while his remarkable 50 2/3-inning scoreless streak ranked among the longest in modern major-league history.

His dominance at home strengthened the case. Pitching in Philadelphia, Sanchez consistently controlled games with his changeup, command and ability to generate ground balls.

This will be his second All-Star appearance but his first start. He previously worked in relief during the 2024 game and retired both hitters he faced.

The last Phillies pitcher to start an All-Star Game was Roy Halladay in 2011.

Cease delivers immediate return for Toronto

The Blue Jays signed Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract during the offseason, betting that his elite arsenal could become more consistent. That gamble has paid off.

Cease reached the break with a 2.56 ERA and 148 strikeouts, placing him among the American League’s most dominant starters. After returning from a left hamstring injury, he posted a 1.73 ERA across six starts and looked even sharper than before the interruption.

This will be Cease’s first All-Star appearance despite twice finishing among the top four in Cy Young voting earlier in his career.

The matchup also carries an unusual historical connection. The last Blue Jays pitcher to start the All-Star Game was Halladay in 2009, two years before he earned the same honor as a member of the Phillies.

Several pitchers withdrew from the game because of injuries or workload concerns, but the opening duel remains worthy of the stage.

Sanchez brings precision, movement and home-field emotion. Cease brings power, strikeouts and one of baseball’s most electric fastballs.

The first inning should provide an immediate reminder of why both pitchers have become central to their teams’ championship hopes.
