Baseball’s longest season is about to become a sprint. The 2026 MLB regular season concludes Sunday, and the postseason begins only two days later on Tuesday, September 29, when four best-of-three Wild Card Series open the road to the World Series.
Twelve teams qualify, six from each league. The top two division winners in the American League and National League receive first-round byes, while the remaining eight clubs enter the Wild Card round.
The higher-seeded team hosts every game of those best-of-three series. Winners advance to the best-of-five Division Series, followed by the best-of-seven League Championship Series and World Series.

How the 2026 postseason format works
The Wild Card round is best-of-three, with the first team to two wins advancing.
The Division Series shifts to best-of-five, with the better seed hosting Games 1, 2 and 5. The Championship Series and World Series are best-of-seven.
Home-field advantage in the World Series goes to the team with the better regular-season record, which hosts Games 1, 2, 6 and 7.
Television coverage changes by round. Wild Card games are scheduled for NBC and Peacock, while the NL Division and Championship Series are on Fox/FS1.
The AL rounds are carried by TBS and HBO Max, with the World Series on Fox and Fox One.
Road to World Series leaves little room for recovery
The schedule is especially compressed early. Wild Card teams could play three games in three days before receiving only one day off ahead of the Division Series.
The Championship Series finish no later than October 20, leaving the pennant winners at least two days before the World Series begins on October 23.
If both series end quickly, the layoff could be considerably longer. One certainty remains that if the Fall Classic goes the distance, the 2026 MLB champion will be crowned on Halloween night.
