MLB All-Star Game 2025: Phillies hero comes up clutch as National League edges historic contest

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta ended with a bang – and a groundbreaking twist – as Philadelphia Phillies fans came away knowing they could be proud of one of their own.

In front of a packed crowd, the National League defeated the American League 4-3 in an all-new tiebreaker format: the first-ever swing-off to decide an All-Star Game.

After nine innings ended in a 6-6 tie, MLB turned to its recently adopted swing-off format – a home run showdown – to determine a winner of this contest.

Each league picked three batters to hit three swings apiece, and it was Kyle Schwarber who sealed the victory for the NL with three clutch homers, finishing off the American League’s hopes in dramatic fashion.

Schwarber steals the spotlight

While the finish grabbed the headlines, the buildup was just as exciting. The game opened with strong pitching performances from both starters.

Tarik Skubal represented the American League and delivered a scoreless first, while rookie sensation Paul Skenes did the same for the National League. The two aces set the tone for a contest packed with talent and intensity.

Jacob Misiorowski emerged as one of the breakout stars of the night. The 23-year-old flamethrower wowed fans with his high-velocity arsenal, showcasing a 98 mph slider and explosive fastball. His flawless inning became a talking point and a preview of the NL’s pitching future.

On the offensive side, the AL’s Brent Rooker gave his squad a boost with a critical three-run homer in the seventh inning. That blast helped tie the game late and set the stage for the unprecedented swing-off finale.

Hank Aaron tribute and a game to remember

Before the first pitch, fans witnessed a powerful moment as MLB honored Hank Aaron by re-creating his historic 715th home run at the same ballpark where it once shook the sport. The emotional tribute paid homage to one of baseball’s true legends and reminded fans of the game’s rich history.

As the game unfolded, it became clear this wasn’t just another exhibition. From Ohtani’s plate appearances to Pete Crow-Armstrong’s athleticism in center field, the game was a true showcase of current stars and rising names.

Offensively, Ketel Marte gave the NL an early edge with a two-RBI double, and the AL’s star-studded lineup responded in kind, keeping the pressure high all night.

But in the end, it was Schwarber’s bat that made the difference – once again. After putting on a show in the Home Run Derby, he capped off his All-Star Week with another clutch performance, driving three balls deep in the swing-off to give the NL the win.
