Mike Vrabel: Sam Darnold’s resilience makes him an elite NFL quarterback

With Super Bowl LX looming on February 8, attention is turning toward the contrast in quarterback play that could help decide the NFL’s biggest game.

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel offered high praise Tuesday for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, highlighting qualities that often separate good quarterbacks from great ones in champion-level games.

Vrabel‘s comments, made during a press conference this week, were striking both for their specificity and for the context in which they were delivered.

Facing a Patriots defense in the league’s final game, Darnold‘s ability to handle pressure is now being talked about not just as a strength, but as a potential strategic advantage for the Seahawks.

“I think he’s handled it well,” Vrabel said Tuesday morning. “There’s a willingness to stand in the pocket and there’s a willingness to progress through. His courage to stand in there, the Rams nailed him and he completed an unbelievable pass to Cooper Kupp on the sideline.

“He didn’t shy away, didn’t duck, didn’t fade back, he stood there and faced the fire, which is what you have to do in this league if you’re going to be an elite quarterback.”

By any measure, the Seahawks‘ signal-caller provides an intriguing study in contrasts. Darnold‘s career has taken him from early struggles as a top draft pick to journeyman status and now to one of the NFL’s most unexpected success stories this season.

The former New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings starter has quietly led Seattle to a 143 regular-season record and into the league’s championship game.

Vrabel‘s praise underscores why Darnold has become one of the NFL’s most resilient quarterbacks.

Over the regular season, Darnold has earned a career-high 7.7 percent sack rate of dropbacks, enduring hits while maintaining focus and composure. For Vrabel, the key is not just the physical durability but Darnold‘s mental toughness.

The Patriots‘ defensive game plan will need to account for Darnold‘s pocket awareness and quick decision-making.

His ability to remain calm under pressure makes him difficult to rattle, even against elite pass rushers.

Vrabel knows that creating chaos won’t come easy.

Respecting Darnold‘s toughness

From the Patriots‘ perspective, preparing to face a quarterback who has shown both vulnerability and the ability to rise to the occasion presents a unique challenge.

New England‘s defense has its own strengths and weaknesses, and Vrabel‘s candid evaluation reflects how seriously his staff views Darnold‘s growth.

Darnold‘s reputation as a quarterback who thrives in adversity has grown throughout his career.

From his time with the Vikings to his current role leading the Seahawks, he has demonstrated an unusual combination of courage and composure, traits that Vrabel clearly respects.

For the Patriots, the challenge is clear: pressure Darnold without overcommitting, force mistakes, and hope to capitalize on any opportunities he gives up.

But as Vrabel acknowledged, Darnold is unlikely to fold under the spotlight of the Super Bowl.

With Super Bowl LX set to be a high-stakes showdown, Vrabel‘s respect for Darnold highlights one of the key battles fans will be watching: a fearless quarterback against a defense determined to make him pay.
