Super Bowl LX between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks was decided not only by tactical execution, but also by a high-friction episode that exposed the emotional fragility ofMike Vrabel’s players as they struggled against the tide. Early in the fourth quarter, Levi’s Stadium witnessed a near brawl that sent tensions soaring.

Everything erupted when Patriotswide receiver Stefon Diggs and Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe became locked in a physical confrontation that escalated into an act of aggression. After a run by rookie Drake Maye, Jobe unnecessarily took Diggs to the ground while he was already out of bounds. The receiver responded by grabbing his opponent’s facemask, prompting Jobe to answer with a pair of direct blows to the helmet, including a clear punch. The controversy intensified due to the officials’ inaction, as they kept their flags in their pockets despite the violent nature of the play.

“It should have been penalized”: experts back Vrabel

The officiating omission ignited Mike Vrabel’s fury. Cameras from The Sporting News captured the New England head coach in an “intense and complaint-filled” exchange with an official, demanding a penalty for the blatant foul against his star receiver. Vrabel was not alone in his protest, as the expert community supported his stance.

Terry McAulay, NBC Sports’ rules analyst, was emphatic in stating that the initial out-of-bounds hit “absolutely” should have been penalized. McAulay stressed that the subsequent altercation warranted multiple penalties on both sides, lamenting that the officiating crew lost control of the situation.

Despite the frustration, Foxborough managed to channel its anger. Just a few plays later, Drake Maye connected with Mack Hollins on a spectacular 35-yard touchdown that briefly restored hope for the Patriots.

However, the emotional spark was short-lived and ultimately insufficient to prevent the team’s defeat.

Still, the incident is expected to have a second act at NFL headquarters, where significant fines are anticipated following video review for unsportsmanlike conduct.
