Mike Tyson confirms potential fight with Floyd Mayweather: “It’s happening”

Speculation surrounding a potential exhibition between boxing legends Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather refuses to disappear. Despite legal distractions, new opponent announcements and months of silence, Tyson insists the long-rumored showdown is far from dead.

The former heavyweight champion recently addressed the topic directly, making it clear he still expects the fight to happen. His comments come as uncertainty grows after Mayweather stepped away from the ring and prepared for another exhibition bout in Europe.

Yeah it’s happening. S- yeah it’s happening. You think I’d give that up? I was minding my business, he challenged me.

The statement immediately reignited fan interest in what would be one of the most unusual crossover events in boxing history – a clash between two undefeated icons from completely different weight classes and eras.

Why the Tyson vs. Mayweather fight remains uncertain

Momentum around the bout slowed after Mayweather filed a massive $340 million lawsuit claiming unpaid earnings from previous fights. At the same time, the undefeated champion hasn’t competed since his August 2024 exhibition against John Gotti III.

Complicating matters further, kickboxing star Mike Zambidis announced he would face Mayweather in Greece, creating doubt about Tyson’s timeline and whether negotiations had stalled.

Still, Tyson insists the challenge originated from Mayweather and that he has no intention of backing away.

For boxing promoters, the matchup remains attractive because it would likely generate enormous pay-per-view interest. The novelty alone – a heavyweight knockout artist versus a defensive master technician – would guarantee global attention.

Tyson’s conditioning adds fuel to the hype

Tyson says his confidence comes from preparation. The 59-year-old claims he has improved his conditioning significantly and even dropped a clothing size while training.

The physical transformation has impressed other fighters, including Conor McGregor, who recently spent time with Tyson and believes the former champion is ready.

I’ll tell you what, he won’t lose. I hope it goes ahead, he seems confident it’s going ahead, he’s well up for it..

Conor McGregor

While supporters see the event as entertainment rather than competition, skeptics question whether two fighters approaching 60 and 50 years old can deliver a meaningful spectacle. Others argue the experience and ring IQ of both legends would make the contest fascinating regardless of pace.

The matchup would pit Tyson’s raw power and aggression against Mayweather’s defensive brilliance – a stylistic contrast that has intrigued fans for decades, even though their primes never overlapped.

For now, no official contract has been announced, and Mayweather’s upcoming commitments remain unclear. But Tyson’s latest comments suggest negotiations may still be alive behind the scenes.

If the fight materializes, it would join the growing trend of blockbuster exhibition bouts blending nostalgia, entertainment and global marketing appeal – proving once again that boxing legends rarely stay retired for long.
