Mike Tomlin’s personal mission to prevent Rodgers’ definitive farewell

Aaron Rodgers arrived with the Pittsburgh Steelers for one season, the 2025 campaign, and on several occasions, he has said it will be his last, or at least he has strongly hinted at that possibility every time he is asked about his future.

Rodgers is now 42 years old, and although he has had an acceptable season, age is beginning to be a factor to consider if he intends to remain active for the 2026 season. The physical demands of the position, combined with the long grind of the NFL calendar, inevitably place additional weight on any decision regarding his continuity.

Aaron Rodgers’ farewell could arrive in Week 18

This coming Sunday night, January 4, 2026, the Steelers and the Ravens will face each other for the final available playoff spot this season. The game is win or go home for both teams, with no margin for error.

Because of this, if Pittsburgh were to lose the battle against Baltimore, it could signal the farewell of the veteran NFL quarterback. Such an outcome would close a chapter defined by resilience, experience, and leadership under pressure.

With that scenario in mind, reporters brought the topic to head coach Mike Tomlin during his press conference, and his response suggested that, for him, this would not necessarily be the end for his quarterback.

I don’t know that I’ve taken time to ponder that. I’m just committed to making sure that it’s not.”…”He’s certainly been an awesome contributor to our efforts, not only from a talent perspective and an experience perspective, but just his professionalism. His relationship with the game, his love for his teammates, and his willingness to help them grow and get better and gain better understanding each and every day has been cool to be a part of.

Tomlin said.

Because this final game against Baltimore will be vital for the franchise’s aspirations, the Steelers want Rodgers’ experience and composure, so that he can also transmit that calm to his teammates and help them secure the victory.

I think we’ve benefited from that at every step of the journey.”… “His experience and what he’s been able to do for a collective relative to thick moments.

The Steelers coach stated.

So far this season, Aaron Rodgers has totaled 3,068 passing yards with a 65.6 percent completion rate, along with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Despite his age, he remains a productive and valuable player capable of guiding an offense.

Now, as they approach the final game of the 2025 season, it could represent Aaron Rodgers’ last appearance on the field, or an opportunity to further enhance his legacy by leading his franchise into the postseason.
