Mike McDaniel could earn a five-year extension with the Dolphins just days after being on the hot seat

The Miami Dolphins finally snapped their seven-game losing streak against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, giving Mike McDaniel a rare positive moment amid months of criticism.

Anthony Weaver‘s defense kept Josh Allen under constant pressure, helping Miami claim a decisive 30-13 victory and restoring confidence in a team long plagued by inconsistency.

Even without key players like cornerback Rasul Douglas, traded pass rusher Jaelan Phillips, and Chop Robinson, who was sidelined with a concussion, Weaver‘s unit performed at its best all season. Allen struggled throughout the game, James Cook was contained, and Buffalo’s offense appeared disorganized. It was Miami’s most complete defensive showing in months.

Jon Gruden predicts winning streak and potential contract extension

Jon Gruden believes this victory is not just a fluke: “The Miami Dolphins, who beat the Buffalo Bills’ ass last week – they’re gonna beat the Washington Commanders at home. Then the Saints will come to town and they’re gonna win three in a row. Then they’re gonna go on the road and beat the Jets. Then they’ll go to Pittsburgh and win five straight, get into playoff contention.”

Despite criticism and calls for McDaniel‘s firing, Gruden thinks this momentum could lead to a five-year contract extension for the coach.

Critics have long questioned McDaniel‘s leadership, often targeting his humor, style, and unique press-conference approach. Sunday’s performance challenged all of that.

A team accused of quitting on its coach showed energy and cohesion, while a coach labeled as ineffective guided his squad through injuries and organizational challenges.

Miami’s roster has flaws. PFF rated the offensive line among the league’s worst, the defense has been inconsistent, and the offense often lacks unpredictability.

Yet McDaniel found ways to win. Kalen Ballage scored two long touchdowns, Tua Tagovailoa minimized mistakes, and the previously struggling defense finally delivered.

With a 3-7 record, the Dolphins still face matchups against Washington, New Orleans, the Jets, and Pittsburgh. If Gruden‘s prediction comes true, McDaniel‘s job will be secure, and the conversation about extending his contract will gain traction.
