Mike McCarthy’s future with the Dallas Cowboys has been a big talking point for much of the NFL season given he is in the final year of his contract.
While much of the discussion has focused on whether Jerry Jones would offer McCarthy a new contract or turn to a new head coach, recent speculation has focused on a new scenario.
According to USA Today, McCarthy could be the one to split up with the Cowboys in order to pursue other head coaching opportunities.

The report comes after the 61-year-old hired Don Yee, who is Tom Brady’s longtime agent and has represented Jim Harbaugh and Sean Payton, as his agent.
Although McCarthy led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-5 seasons with two division titles prior to this year, his tenure has been viewed as a failure by many due to his 1-3 record in the playoffs.
Nevertheless, McCarthy did win a Super Bowl during his time with the Green Bay Packers, though that will have happened 14 years ago once his contract expires.
Cowboys have backed McCarthy
Jones has thrown his support behind McCarthy despite the Cowboys’ disappointing campaign, and some believe he will be in demand should he not be offered a contract extension.
Another of layer of intrigue was added to the situation when Jones heaped praise on McCarthy following the Cowboys’ surprise win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football. The performance came just hours after the Cowboys were eliminated from playoff contention.
“Proud of those guys, boy,” Jones told reporters after the game. “They wouldn’t give it up out there. So, I’m real proud of them, and Mike McCarthy, he just won’t let them not think that they’re not playing for a Super Bowl out there.”
