Mike McCarthy addresses Aaron Rodgers uncertainty as Steelers await key decision

The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in a holding pattern as Aaron Rodgers weighs his future, and head coach Mike McCarthy has now offered his most candid comments yet on the situation.

Speaking at league meetings, McCarthy made it clear that communication between the team and Rodgers remains ongoing, even as uncertainty lingers.

The veteran quarterback has yet to confirm whether he will return for another season, leaving Pittsburgh to balance patience with preparation.

“I think he’s in a really good spot in his life. But he’s 42,” McCarthy said.

That brief assessment captured both respect for Rodgers‘ situation and the reality facing the franchise as it looks ahead to the 2026 season.

Steelers preparing for every scenario

While the focus remains on Rodgers‘ decision, McCarthy emphasized that the Steelers are not standing still.

The organization has already mapped out multiple contingency plans, ensuring they are ready regardless of the outcome.

“I think like anything, people talk about having a plan,” McCarthy explained.

“You got to be able to adjust… There really aren’t too many scenarios we haven’t talked about.”

Currently, the Steelers have limited depth at quarterback, with only a couple of options on the roster. That reality makes Rodgers‘ decision even more significant as the NFL Draft approaches.

Even if the four time MVP chooses not to return, McCarthy suggested the team’s broader strategy will remain intact, including the possibility of selecting a quarterback in the draft or exploring veteran additions.

A familiar connection adds intrigue

Part of what makes this situation particularly compelling is the long standing relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers.

The two spent over a decade together with the Green Bay Packers, winning a Super Bowl and building one of the league’s most successful partnerships.

That history has naturally fueled speculation about a potential reunion in Pittsburgh. McCarthy has previously acknowledged the appeal, calling the idea a “great story,” while also recognizing that the final decision rests entirely with Rodgers.

For now, the Steelers continue to wait.

With the draft closing in and roster decisions looming, the franchise is carefully navigating a situation that could define its immediate future.

Whether Rodgers returns or moves on, McCarthy has made one thing clear: Pittsburgh intends to be ready.
