Bam Adebayo‘s historic scoring explosion quickly became the talk of the basketball world, drawing reactions from players, coaches, and fans across the NBA.
Among the flood of messages the Miami Heat star received afterward, one stood out for its simplicity, a brief note from Michael Jordan acknowledging the remarkable night.
According to the Miami Heat star, the message was exactly what you might expect from the famously concise six-time champion.
“Just congratulations,” Adebayo said. “Very short and sweet. If you know Mike, he’s not talking a lot.”
The brief message arrived after Adebayo produced a performance that instantly rewrote the record books. Playing for the Miami Heat against the Washington Wizards, the All-Star center erupted for 83 points in a 150-129 victory on March 10.
The total now ranks as the second-highest single-game scoring performance in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain‘s legendary 100-point game in 1962.
Adebayo‘s feat also pushed him past the iconic 81-point performance by Kobe Bryant in 2006, placing the Heat star in extraordinarily rare company.
For a player long known primarily for his defense, playmaking, and versatility rather than explosive scoring, the performance stunned even seasoned NBA observers. Adebayo finished the night shooting 20-for-43 from the field and setting league records with 36 made free throws on 43 attempts.
From the opening quarter, it was clear something unusual was unfolding. Adebayo poured in 31 points in the first period alone, reached 43 by halftime, and had already climbed to 62 by the end of the third quarter before pushing further into historic territory late in the game.
A performance that shocked the NBA
The magnitude of the moment quickly spread throughout the league. Players, coaches, and analysts reacted across social media and postgame interviews as Adebayo joined a list of scoring legends that previously seemed untouchable.
His own reaction afterward reflected both awe and humility at the company he had entered.
“It’s wondering what he would say…to be 83 and pass him, my mind is like, ‘what would he say to me?’ Because I’ve always wanted to have a conversation with him, but he’ll probably say, ‘Go do it again.’ But just a surreal moment, being in the company with somebody you idolized growing up.”
The comment referred to Bryant, whom Adebayo has long cited as a basketball inspiration. Passing Bryant‘s mark carried emotional weight for a player who grew up studying the late Lakers icon’s approach to the game.
The historic night unfolded at the Heat‘s home arena in Miami and came during a stretch in which the team was dealing with several injuries across its roster. Despite those absences, the victory extended Miami‘s winning streak and underscored Adebayo‘s growing role as the franchise’s centerpiece.
League history suggests performances of this scale rarely arrive from expected places. While the NBA has seen scoring explosions from prolific guards and perimeter shooters in recent years, Adebayo‘s achievement was particularly surprising because of his usual role as a defensive anchor and facilitator.
