Michael Jordan finally managed to sell his mansion in Chicago as the legendary basketballer found a taker for the Highland Park property, which had been listed for over a decade and even had the asking price slashed dramatically.
The six-time NBA champion initially put the nine-bedroom house on the market for $29 million but the price eventually felt down to just nine million before John Cooper finally made the purchase.
He recently celebrated his birthday at the property and plans to make sure it honors Jordan’s legacy in the sport, by retaining features such as the numbers 23 which adorn the gates and features a basketball court.
Cooper, who is 42 and works for the real estate company HAN Capital, doesn’t plan to make wholesale changes but will reveal further details of what he looks to do with the 56,000 square-foot land in January.
“I remember seeing the home for sale,” Cooper told Lincoln Journal Star. “And thinking how cool it would be for the person that buys the home.
“My favorite player to watch was always Jordan. He made shots that seemed impossible, and he got it done on defense too.
“I’ll announce some exciting plans for the property in January,’ he said. ‘I do not have any major renovation plans. I will honor the property’s legacy. This place is great just the way it is.”
What is Michael Jordan doing today?
Alongside the plethora of bedrooms and the basketball court, the home also includes 19 bathrooms, a library, an indoor gym, an infinity pool and a tennis court but Jordan hasn’t lived there for some time.
The 61-year-old billionaire primarily lives in North Carolina since he bowed out of the Bulls Arena in 1998. The five-time MVP then turned out for the Washington Wizards from 2001-2003 before becoming owner of the Charlotte Hornets.
He then left the team in August 2023 after selling the franchise to Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin for three billion dollars, and since then he has decided to spend some of his money on sportscars and private jets.
The wealthiest athlete in history, Jordan makes $260 million annual in royalties from his Air Jordan Nike connection to top up his salary and ensure he doesn’t have to dip into his own personal fortune too often.
