Michael Jordan, who for many is the best basketball player in history, shared on ‘MJ: Insights to Excellence’ on NBC that his passion for the game was the foundation of his legendary success and the creation of his iconic logo (Jumpman from the Jordan brand) that all brands have tried to emulate.

“I’m part of the reason why everybody is trying to get a logo, but the thing is that brand was built on what I did on the basketball court. I didn’t put the brand before the work,” said Jordan, who has a net worth of nearly $4 billion, mainly thanks to his world-famous ‘Air Jordan’ brand.

‘Air’, speaking about his unusual “love of the game” clause in his contract, explained to Mike Tirico that he was proud of that clause that does not exist in today’s contracts: “If I’m driving down the street with you and I see a basketball game on the side of the road, I can go play it, and if I get hurt, my contract is still guaranteed… I love the game so much that I would never let anyone take away my opportunity to play, unlike now.”

Michael Jordan (62) stressed that playing basketball was everything to him and his goal was to reach new heights every time he stepped on the court: “I found it beneficial for me: to go play basketball. That’s what you did. That’s what you did as a kid. Larry Bird took a whole summer to work his left and right hand. He did it by playing basketball.”

“The thing is that brand was established based on what I did on the basketball court. I didn’t prioritize the brand over the work. I prioritized the work, and then the brand evolved through the work,” he said.

The winner of six NBA championship rings is aware of the new times, with the dictatorship of mobile phones and social networks, which have nothing to do with his own:
“I always said we would play this sport for free, and we did. And now it turns out we get paid for it. Generationally, I like to think that most of the time people remember Michael Jordan for what he did on the basketball court and not always for the commercials he did,” he reflected.
