It’s not every day a football legend gets surprised mid-golf round by the greatest basketball player of all time. But that’s exactly what happened when Lawrence Taylor, the iconic New York Giantslinebacker and proud Tar Heel, found himself face-to-face with Michael Jordan-on MJ’s home turf no less.
The run-in took place at The Grove XXIII, Jordan’s ultra-exclusive golf club in Florida, a haven for athletes who enjoy their swings loose and their dress codes looser. Taylor, a regular at the club, was enjoying a casual round when the Black Cat himself rolled up in a golf cart like it was nothing. A camera happened to be rolling, and what followed quickly went viral.
Jordan greeted LTlike an old college buddy-because that’s exactly what they are. The two became friends back in the early ’80s at UNC. But after the warm embrace came the jab. Jordan couldn’t resist clowning his longtime friend.
When MJ Sees Crocs on the Course, He Calls You Out-Even If You’re Lawrence Taylor
“Call me anytime,”Jordan yelled as he headed back to his own game, but not before pointing at Taylor’s kicks and letting loose: “You really been on a m—- relaxed since retirement! So relaxed like a m—-, man.”
Taylor burst into laughter-and so did the internet. The shoes in question? Hard to say for sure, but they looked more ECCO than Air Jordan. Probably slip-ons. Comfortable? Absolutely. Approved by MJ? Not a chance.
Clips of the interaction were posted by TikTok user @golfnutz4 and reshared by Ziregolf with the caption, “Two GOATs.” Fans ate it up. The moment felt real, unfiltered, and full of the chemistry only decades of friendship can produce.
That friendship started on the hardwood at UNC, where Taylor-then already a football star-would join pickup games with a young Jordan. According to former Tar Heel Buzz Peterson, LT’s physical style gave even MJ pause. “He was the one guy Michael might’ve feared-and he wasn’t even a basketball player,” Peterson once told All the Smoke.
So maybe this little roast was Jordan’s way of settling the score. A long time coming. One joke, 40 years in the making.
