Michael Irvin has never been shy about sharing stories from his colorful career, and his latest revelation is as candid as they come.
Appearing on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, the Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer admitted that he used his very first million-dollar check to boost his sex life.
“That check, that first million-dollar check. I left that right there on the table,” Irvin said, pretending to hold a check in his hand. “Right in my room, so as soon as they walk in they say, ‘That’s your check.'”
The three-time Super Bowl champion then imitated a woman stripping, sending Sharpe into fits of laughter before embracing him.
“I say, yeah, yeah, yeah,” Irvin continued. “I had my finance people calling me, telling me, ‘Send that check, Michael, we’re losing, we’re losing.’ I said, ‘Shoot, I’m winning. What you talking about? I’m winning like a… But it’s real, it was real.”
From “Brokeville” to the Cowboys dynasty
Irvin, who was drafted with the No. 11 pick in 1988, explained that his behavior at the time stemmed from his humble beginnings. Growing up in a poor part of Florida, the sudden wealth was overwhelming.
“I didn’t know anything” after getting that life-changing money, he admitted.
That money and confidence quickly turned into success on the field. Irvin became one of the most iconic wide receivers in Cowboys history, racking up 750 catches for 11,904 yards and 65 touchdowns over 12 seasons.
He led the league with 1,523 receiving yards in 1991, earned First-Team All-Pro honors, and made five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 1991 to 1995. More importantly, he was a cornerstone of the Cowboys dynasty that won three Super Bowls in four years during the 1990s.
His teams were as famous for their dominance as they were for their off-field antics, something Netflix recently chronicled in the documentary America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.
A calmer life later on
For Irvin, his rookie check story fits right in with the era’s larger-than-life personalities.
Despite enjoying his bachelor days early in his NFL career, Irvin soon settled into family life.
He married Sandy Harrell in 1990, and the couple remains together after 35 years. They share three children, Chelsea, Michael Jr., and Elijah, while Irvin also has an older daughter, Myeesha, from a previous relationship.
