Micah Parsons was not as beloved as Luka Doncic: Dallas could understand Jerry Jones

In a short span, Dallas sports enthusiasts have been hit with two shocking trades that have shaken the city’s athletic spirit.

Back in February, the Dallas Mavericks’ blockbuster decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves throughout the NBA community. Shortly after, the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with their star linebacker Micah Parsons, sending him to the Green Bay Packers.

Both moves mark the end of important chapters for these franchises and their passionate fanbases.

Comparing the impact: Luka Doncic vs. Micah Parsons

Micah Parsons, a two-time First-Team All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, was a cornerstone of the Cowboys’ defense. The trade sent Parsons to the Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

Parsons, who had been negotiating a new contract with Dallas, signed a lucrative four-year, $188 million deal with Green Bay, including $120 million guaranteed. Despite his undeniable talent and impact on the field, the reaction from the Dallas community was comparatively muted.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon noted that while Cowboys fans were unhappy about Parsons’ departure, the intensity and outrage did not reach the level of uproar seen when Luka Doncic was traded. This difference in reaction highlights the unique emotional connection between Dallas fans and their stars.

“I don’t sense quite that level of outrage. Certainly, my mentions aren’t as on fire as after the loop. But I mean, people ain’t happy, people are not happy,” Bontemps said on the Hoop Collective podcast.

On the other hand, Doncic was much more than just a basketball player for the Mavericks, he was viewed as the franchise’s future, a potential NBA legend destined to bring championships to Dallas. When the Mavericks traded Doncic to the Lakers, fans responded with fury. Protests erupted outside the American Airlines Center, with fans even bringing a coffin as a symbol of mourning.

The chants calling for the firing of GM Nico Harrison echoed across the city. The trade drew statewide attention, even catching the notice of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who publicly expressed his shock and disappointment.

The aftermath of the Luka trade has been severe for the Mavericks organization. Season ticket cancellations soared and merchandise sales plummeted. The team’s management has acknowledged mistakes in communication and handling the situation but rebuilding trust with the loyal fanbase remains a difficult challenge.

This contrast in fan reaction underscores how differently each player was perceived. Doncic was the emotional and symbolic heart of Dallas basketball, while Parsons, though a dominant NFL talent, did not command the same deep-rooted loyalty from Cowboys fans.

These twin departures open a broader conversation about the bonds between athletes and the cities they represent. Business decisions often clash with fan loyalty, revealing how much emotional investment communities place in their sports heroes.

As Dallas moves forward, both the Mavericks and Cowboys face the tough task of reconnecting with their fanbases and restoring the pride once embodied by Doncic and Parsons.
