The Dallas Cowboys believe they have a roster that is good enough to compete for a Super Bowl in 2025 — even if most observers don’t think they are close to challenging the Philadelphia Eagles next season. That said, there is no doubt that a healthier and more motivated Cowboys team can make some noise in the NFC, though opinion varies on just how loud that noise will be.
Trading star edge rusher Micah Parsons would put a damper on things for Dallas, just after the franchise got over the “PR nightmare” associated with the hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as the franchise’s new head coach. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are having “internal discussions” over dealing Parsons before owner Jerry Jones has to hand him a market-setting contract extension. Such a move would go down badly with Cowboys fans…and star receiver CeeDee Lamb, who himself had a contract standoff with Jones last year.
Lamb: Dallas drought won’t end without Parsons
Lamb has spoken out on X/Twitter about the recent Parsons rumors. The four-time Pro Bowler rhetorically asked if the rumors “every offseason” weren’t tiring, and he insisted that if the Cowboys are to win ball games in 2025, they need Parsons to stick around.
Parsons has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his four NFL seasons, and he has 52.5 sacks in just 63 career games, which speaks to his dominance when healthy. In each of his first three seasons, Parsons finished top three in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and it could be a generational mishap for Jones not to pay him — especially after the Cowboys’ longtime owner handed out market-setting extensions to Lamb, Trevon Diggs, and Dak Prescott.
Parsons understands that any team with championship aspirations must have a strong defensive front — something the Eagles used to great effect as they took down the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Everyone knows that Dallas is desperate to end its 29-year Super Bowl drought — trading Parsons would take the Cowboys further away from that goal, unless Jones can swing a star player in return (which, let’s face it, feels highly unlikely).
