Micah Parsons seeks second medical opinion on back tightness amid contract standoff

Micah Parsons, the four time Pro Bowl edge rusher for the Dallas Cowboys, has remained sidelined with a reported back issue. Despite a clean MRI, Parsons traveled to seek a second medical opinion, a decision that adds nuance to his ongoing hold-in amid unresolved contract negotiations. The move signals montuing tension and uncertainty as the Cowboys edge closer to their season opener.

Parsons seeks second opinion

Parsons traveled from DFW airport to obtain a second medical opinion regarding his reported back tightness, despite his MRI being deemed “pretty clean”, according to coach Brian Schottenheimer. Parsons has been absent from practice, citing his back each time, signaling a worrisome trend for the Cowboys’ defensive plans.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter acknowledged that while the Cowboys have downplayed the issue, Parsons’ claims are not easy to dismiss. Schefter hinted that his injury and contract situation may be intertwined. The pursuit of another opinion suggests that the Cowboys’ opening day status for Parsons remains in question.

Holdout vs Health

Parsons filed a trade request earlier this offseason and is currently holding out, pushing for a contract extension. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, however, has emphasized that his existing deal is secure through 2027, including a franchise tag option. In light of this, Parsons seeking further evaluation could reflect genuine medical concern, or it may be seen as leverage amid negotiations.

The timing is critical with the Cowboys opening their season against the Eagles just days away. Meanwhile, teammates like Trevon Diggs emphasize Parsons’ commitment, calling Dallas his “home”, though even Diggs acknowledged Parsons’ week 1 availability hinges on his back tightness.
