Micah Parsons raises eyebrows by skipping Cowboys workouts but says goodbye to retiring teammate

Micah Parsons, the Dallas Cowboys’ standout linebacker, is at the center of the team’s offseason discussions. Despite not attending the Cowboys’ voluntary workouts recently, Parsons remains engaged in the team’s activities.

He has been working individually with his offseason coach, Lance Deane, at The Star in Frisco, Texas, indicating his commitment to maintaining peak performance.

Parsons is entering the fifth year of his rookie contract, set to earn approximately $24 million in 2025. Given his exceptional performance, including at least 12 sacks in each of his first four seasons, the Cowboys are under pressure to secure a long-term deal with him.

The market for elite edge rushers has escalated, with players like Myles Garrett setting new benchmarks. Parsons is reportedly seeking a contract that could make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, with projections estimating a deal worth around $175 million over five years, including $125 million guaranteed.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has acknowledged the need for an extension, stating that most issues have been discussed and agreed upon. However, formal negotiations have yet to commence. The delay in finalizing Parsons’ contract mirrors previous situations with other key players, raising concerns about potential holdouts as the season approaches

A farewell to a Cowboys legend

Amidst the contract discussions, the Cowboys bid farewell to another franchise cornerstone. Tyron Smith, the team’s long-time left tackle, announced his retirement after 14 seasons.

Smith signed a one-day contract to retire as a Cowboy, and a retirement ceremony was held in his honor. During the event, Jerry Jones expressed regret over not securing a Super Bowl victory with Smith on the roster, highlighting the tackle’s significant contributions to the team.

While the moment was an emotional one for everyone involved, eyebrows were raised given Parsons was in attendance for the press conference despite not attending voluntary workouts earlier in the day.

This has set off speculation if Parsons is turning sour over the drawn out contract talks, and that his decision to miss workouts is a sign that things aren’t headed in the right direction.

As the Cowboys navigate these transitions, securing Parsons’ future with the team remains a top priority. The outcome of these negotiations will be pivotal in shaping the team’s defensive strategy for the upcoming seasons.
