As a reissue of the 2023 Gold Cup final, the representatives of Mexico and Panama will face each other in an all-or-nothing match at the SoFi Stadium for the title of the Concacaf Nations League, after having passed the difficult tests of their counterparts from Canada and United States, respectively.
The United States is the only champion of this recent tournament and since 2019 has shown a hegemony that will be broken for the first time, as they were unfortunately eliminated by a late goal from Panama’s Cecilio Waterman, while Javier Aguirre’s side secured their place with a spectacular brace from Raul Jimenez against the Maple Leafs.
A duel that is becoming a classic
The duels between Canaleros and Aztecs are gaining momentum, especially after that 2015 Gold Cup semifinal that was decided with much refereeing controversy thanks to Mark Geiger, and in which the Panamanians were about to leave the field at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Both teams will be looking for their first title in the competition in a match that is expected to be highly intense, and could be decided in a penalty shootout, as the tiebreaker criteria includes extra time and penalty kicks.
