Mets’ playoff dreams in jeopardy as Mendoza struggles to find answers

The New York Mets find themselves at a pivotal crossroads in the 2025 MLB season. After a devastating 10-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs, the pressure on manager Carlos Mendoza and his team has intensified dramatically.

With just a slim one-game lead in the National League wild-card race and only a handful of games left, the Mets’ postseason hopes now rest on a knife’s edge.

This recent defeat magnified many of the team’s ongoing struggles. Pitcher Jonah Tong’s outing was particularly troubling, as he surrendered five earned runs in just two innings. This poor performance has brought Tong’s ERA to a troubling 7.71 over five starts, a glaring indicator of the Mets’ persistent pitching difficulties this season.

Despite the offensive contributions of Francisco Alvarez and Juan Soto, who both hit home runs, the Mets could not overcome the Cubs’ early surge, highlighting the inconsistency that has plagued the team all year.

Mets’ defensive woes and pitching troubles

Defensively, the Mets have been just as shaky. Third baseman Mark Vientos, placed in that role by Mendoza to boost the team’s offensive potential, has become a symbol of the team’s defensive lapses.

A costly error by Vientos in the Cubs game epitomized the ongoing struggles, as defensive mistakes continue to hamper the Mets’ ability to maintain leads or stay competitive in tight games.

Pitching has also been a glaring weakness. Since mid-June, the Mets’ rotation has posted a concerning 5.01 ERA, while opposing batters have maintained a solid .257 average against them.

Starters have increasingly failed to pitch deep into games, which puts additional pressure on the bullpen and exposes the team to late-inning collapses. This trend has been a critical factor in the Mets’ slide down the standings as they battle to hold onto their playoff position.

Meanwhile, the Mets’ handling of promising young talent has drawn scrutiny. Players like Jett Williams, who remain in the minor leagues despite the team’s urgent need for an offensive spark, have sparked questions among fans and analysts alike.

With the postseason race tightening, many wonder if Mendoza and the front office are fully committed to making the moves necessary to maximize the team’s current playoff window.

Adding to the Mets’ troubles, rivals such as the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks are closing in, both holding tiebreaker advantages that threaten New York’s hold on the wild-card spot. The margin for error is now razor-thin, and every misstep could prove costly.

For Carlos Mendoza, the coming weeks represent one of the most challenging periods of his managerial career. How he manages his pitching staff, navigates defensive struggles, and utilizes his roster could very well determine whether the Mets secure a postseason berth or once again fall short of their goals.

With the season winding down, the team’s ability to overcome its current hurdles will be critical in deciding their fate as playoff contenders.
