Mets claim former Nationals reliever Wander Suero off waivers

The Mets have officially announced that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Wander Suero off waivers after he was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves. At 33 years of age, Suero becomes the latest attempt by the New York organization to shore up a bullpen that has been heavily taxed this season.

Suero, a native of the Dominican Republic, has a unique MLB story. After eight seasons in the minor leagues, he made his debut with the Washington Nationals in 2018. He was part of the World Series-winning bullpen in 2019 and went on to lead the team in appearances that year. While his performance has been inconsistent in recent years, his experience in pressure situations is something the Mets could take advantage of.

Wander Suero’s MLB journey: Washington promise to his struggle to return to prominence

After leaving the Nationals in 2021, Suero has gone through several organizations, including the Angels, Dodgers, Astros and most recently the Braves. Although he has had good numbers in Triple-A, his recent performances in MLB have not been encouraging, as he posted a 11.37 ERA in just five outings with Atlanta.

Despite this, New York is confident that he can provide stability and depth at key moments. In a season finale where every arm counts, Suero’s track record against high-level hitters can be useful, especially if he manages to regain his control and consistency.

What does this move mean for the Mets and their bullpen heading into October?

The arrival of Suero could indicate that the Mets are exploring all possible options to ease the burden on their bullpen, one of the most used in the league this year. With several young arms nearing their innings limit and others dealing with nagging injuries, the Dominican’s signing acts as an experienced patch in the midst of the postseason race.

While it’s not an acquisition that will make headlines on a large scale, its impact could be felt in the management of the team’s wear and tear. If Suero can find the rhythm he showed years ago in Washington, he could become an unexpected but valuable resource.
