The New York Mets were not at all happy with the performance of right-handed pitcher Kevin Herget, whose only outing on April 29 at Citi Field only lasted two innings, allowing two runs and three hits in the game that the Queens team won by eight runs to three.
From Arizona to Queens
In the twists and turns of life, the Mets decided to make room in their bullpen by designating the Teaneck, New Jersey, native for assignment in order to acquire a pitcher, precisely from the team they faced that day at their stadium, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The D-backs had also put in the same situation -for the benefit of their top prospect Jordan Lawlar– since May 12 the Venezuelan pitcher Jose Castillo, who thanks to a cash deal arrives to the New York ninth to reinforce their bullpen, with the privileged left arm that has him pitching for five seasons in the Major Leagues, since his arrival from his native Valencia, Venezuela.
Jose Castillo wants to leave injuries behind
The famous ‘Big Dude’ has had an unfortunate spell in the Major Leagues after joining the San Diego Padres in 2018, as he has dealt with injuries, first in 2019 with the tendon of the middle finger of his left hand, and then with Tommy John surgery in 2021. However, it is expected that 2025 will be his breakout season, as he was once thought to be an elite closer, thanks to his rookie numbers, with an ERA of 3.29, a FIP of 2.64 and a strikeout average of 52% in 38 innings.
Castillo arrives at the Mets after signing a minor league contract with Arizona where he made 21 appearances for Triple-A Reno in 2024, after which he opted for free agency and re-signed with the D-Backs.
