Messi’s renewal: Inter Miami offer him a long contract… until Leo wants

As reported by MARCA in recent months, Inter Miami and Lionel Messi are continuing to negotiate what will be, if nothing unusual happens, the Argentine star’s next renewal with the MLS club, with whom he will be out of contract at the end of 2025.

The renewal is still being processed (nothing has been signed), but the intentions are on the table. The player’s idea is to continue playing in Miami in order to win titles with the club and to be in good shape for the 2026 World Cup, which would be his sixth World Cup, something unprecedented in the history of soccer (there are eight players with five, Cristiano among them).

Inter Miami is considering offering Messi a contract as a player for at least three years (until 2028), or even longer if he wants to continue playing at the age of 41. That’s what’s being discussed from Inter’s offices in downtown Miami.

We explain. The important thing is that both want to stay together, and the essential thing is that Messi will play as long as he feels like it and has the strength to do so. This will be independent of the contract that is signed in years (natural, since MLS, for now, competes that way). It is independent because what Inter offers is a multi-year contract of three, four or five years. In other words, Messi will play as long as he wants and then occupy other areas of the club (there he will have to compete with Barca), since, and this is key, Messi is a partner (with shares) of Inter, that is, one more owner (it was signed in his initial contract), so it is nonsense to talk about specific years, although the soccer industry handles it that way.

That is to say, a long contract, but only as long as Messi wants to play, even looking for formulas that allow Leo to lengthen or shorten it, as he has said on occasion. Leo still has challenges ahead of him, such as the current Leagues Cup (which he already won with Inter in 2023); the MLS, which he has not yet won (although he did win the Supporters’ Shield, which in the USA is official); the Concachampions… and the 2026 World Cup challenge with Argentina.

We will keep you informed about the steps in this renewal of Leo Messi.
