Messi speaks out: This is how he responded to the 2022 World Cup controversy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez

Argentine goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman of Tigres UANL in his podcast “Miro de Atras”, which began as an intimate space for chats and reflections, recently became a media event when he received a special guest: Lionel Messi.

For just over an hour, the Argentine star recalled key moments in his career, anecdotes that marked his path and also episodes that placed him at the center of controversy. Among them was that unexpected clash with one of the greatest figures in Mexican sport: the world boxing champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

How did the fight between Messi and Canelo come about?

The tension between these two sporting giants dates back to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when the Mexican champion interpreted that Messi had thrown to the ground and kicked the shirt of the Mexican national team in the dressing room after he exchanged with the historic player of the Mexican national team Andres Guardado.

Faced with the video of Messi supposedly disrespecting the Mexican national team jersey, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez did not want to sit idly by and the social network X posted a series of tweets showing his annoyance with the Argentine star. What followed was a heated brawl on social networks, with thousands of fans taking sides and the debate multiplying in every corner of the digital world.

What did Messi say about his misunderstanding with Canelo Alvarez?

In the podcast, Messi recalled that episode with serenity, showing that, beyond the controversy, his figure transcends misunderstandings.

That’s where the Mexicans’ anger with me starts and the truth is that it has nothing to do with it, it’s a normal situation of any match, any dressing room after a match of any kind. Anyone who plays football and understands the dressing room knows that it is something normal. I think it was Guardado’s shirt.

You take off your shirt and put it there (on the floor) because it’s all sweaty, just like yours, I take mine off too and put it there, it’s the most normal thing and I think something very big was made after that that had nothing to do with it.

Nahuel Guzman also commented in the same podcast about the possible discomfort that Mexicans have towards the Argentine national team and it is that, in recent editions, except for the World Cups in Brazil and Russia in the last World Cup, the Mexican national team has been eliminated by the Albiceleste, thus avoiding that the Mexicans reach the long-awaited fifth game.
