With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner, one of the great expectations of soccer fans is to see Lionel Messi playing another World Cup with the Argentine national team, especially considering that they are the current champions of the tournament after winning it in 2022. However, the Argentine star made some statements that may worry fans of the Albiceleste.

It seemed that Messi’s presence at the next World Cup was assured, however, everything could be in doubt considering his physical and mental condition, as the footballer himself explained in an interview with NBC, where he talked about everything and explained his reasons for whether or not he will make it to the World Cup.

Messi casts doubt on his participation in 2026 World Cup

In the interview with NBC, Lionel Messi was quite candid and explained that nothing is certain about his future. Although the player wants to play in the next World Cup, there are key factors that will determine this and he takes it quite calmly.

“I’ll see if I can be 100 per cent, be useful to the group and then I’ll make a decision,” Messi explained about the option of being at the next World Cup. In addition, the Argentine added that “we come from winning the last World Cup and to be able to defend it would be spectacular. I would like to feel good and continue to be part of the national team, if I am fit.”

Messi explained that it is important to analyze the day-to-day in order to see how he feels about playing another World Cup and also took the opportunity to remember the 2022 World Cup. “It was the dream of my life. Everything came true, and what I went through with my family, my people and with Argentina was unforgettable.”

Messi’s reasons for renewing with Inter Miami

In addition to his continuity with the Argentine national team, Messi also defined his future at club level, as it was announced that he renewed his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, so MLS fans will be able to continue enjoying the best player in the world.

Both Messi and his wife have made it clear that they are very happy in Miami and that these decisions are made as a couple and as a family to prioritize the welfare of themselves and their children.

With the World Cup just around the corner, Messi is keeping his options open and will analyze the day-to-day to see if soccer fans will be able to enjoy the No. 10 in a new World Cup.
