Maxx Crosby’s future with Raiders linked to Rob Leonard’s promotion

The Las Vegas Raiders are preparing to make a significant internal promotion that could define the team’s defensive identity under new head coach Klint Kubiak.

Sources indicate that former defensive line coach Rob Leonard is expected to take over as defensive coordinator for the 2026 season. By promoting from within, the Raiders aim to maintain continuity while injecting fresh energy into their defensive strategy.

Leonard has been a cornerstone of the Raiders’ defensive line since joining the staff in 2023. During this time, he has developed a close rapport with standout edge rusher Maxx Crosby, whose future with the team remains a topic of considerable attention.

The relationship between Leonard and Crosby is viewed as a crucial factor, especially as the Raiders plan to make a strong push to retain their star pass rusher in the upcoming offseason. Leonard‘s promotion follows interviews with other candidates, including Jeff Howard from the Seattle Seahawks and DeMarcus Covington of the Green Bay Packers, both highly respected defensive minds.

Choosing Leonard signals that Kubiak values continuity and a philosophy centered on strong line play.

Before his tenure in Las Vegas, Leonard built a diverse coaching resume that includes stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and New York Giants. He began his coaching career as a high school assistant and later transitioned to college football with his alma mater, NC State, in 2010.

Over the years, Leonard has developed a reputation for nurturing talent on the defensive front and understanding the nuances of run defense-skills that will be essential as he assumes full responsibility for coordinating the Raiders’ defense.

Stability and relationships could be key

Beyond his technical expertise, Leonard‘s promotion also reflects the Raiders’ focus on fostering strong relationships with key players. Maxx Crosby, who ended the 2025 season amid speculation of a potential trade, remains a central figure in Las Vegas’ defensive plans.

Leonard‘s close connection with Crosby could prove invaluable in keeping the Pro Bowl pass rusher engaged and motivated while reinforcing leadership within the locker room.

Additionally, the team is retaining defensive pass game coordinator Joe Woods, ensuring that the back end of the defense benefits from continuity and experience alongside Leonard‘s leadership at the line.

As Leonard steps into his new role, Kubiak is still assembling the remainder of his coaching staff. Known for his offensive expertise, Kubiak is expected to take a deliberate approach to hiring both his offensive and special teams coordinators, ensuring that each position complements the team’s long-term vision.

The promotion of Leonard, therefore, represents not just a staffing decision but a strategic cornerstone in the Raiders’ efforts to rebuild and strengthen their defense heading into the 2026 season.
