Maxx Crosby’s family reacts to Ravens’ disrespect during trade negotiations

The trip to Baltimore was supposed to mark the start of a new chapter for Maxx Crosby.

Instead, it ended with a conversation that stopped a blockbuster NFL trade in its tracks.

According to multiple reports, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens had reached a tentative agreement that would send the star edge rusher to Baltimore in exchange for two first-round draft picks. Crosby traveled to the Ravens’ facility expecting the deal to be finalized.

It never was.

Baltimore ultimately backed out after Crosby failed a physical. The team then pivoted quickly and signed Trey Hendrickson to a reported four-year, $112 million contract, shifting its pass-rush strategy almost immediately.

What reportedly happened inside Baltimore’s facility

NFL insider Dianna Russini shared new details during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, describing a situation that surprised many across the league.

Crosby spent hours inside the Ravens’ building believing the deal was moving forward. At one point he was called into the office of Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta, where he was informed the trade would not move forward because of injury concerns.

Russini described the moment bluntly.

“Crosby was there, not knowing that he was a dead man walking.”

The revelation that Baltimore was already speaking with Hendrickson while Crosby remained inside the facility quickly became the most controversial detail of the entire episode.

The situation created an uncomfortable moment for everyone involved. Trades collapsing after a physical are not unusual in the NFL, but the optics of how this one unfolded drew attention around the league.

“I can tell you the Ravens spoke to Trey Hendrickson yesterday, while Max Crosby was in the building. That tells you that they were aware that something was going on…Crosby was there, not knowing that he was a dead man walking

Reaction spreads across the NFL

Executives around the league reportedly took notice of how the situation played out. According to Russini and other league observers, some rival front offices were frustrated by the sequence of events.

For Crosby, the situation carried a personal dimension as well.

Members of the Crosby family reportedly expressed disappointment with how the process unfolded, feeling the Raiders star was placed in an awkward position after traveling to Baltimore expecting a finalized deal.

The reaction highlights how delicate these negotiations can be. When trades reach the stage where players travel for physicals and meetings, teams usually expect the process to end with a signed agreement.

This time, it did not.

Why this moment matters for both teams

From a football standpoint, the Ravens still accomplished their main objective.

By signing Trey Hendrickson, Baltimore secured one of the league’s most productive pass rushers in recent seasons. Hendrickson recorded 17.5 sacks in 2023 with the Cincinnati Bengals, placing him among the NFL’s elite edge defenders.

Baltimore’s defense has consistently ranked near the top of the league in pressure rate and sacks in recent years. Adding Hendrickson allows the Ravens to maintain that identity heading into the next season.

For the Raiders, the collapse of the trade leaves their defensive cornerstone in place.

Crosby has been the emotional leader of the Raiders defense since entering the NFL in 2019. His relentless style and durability helped him become one of the league’s most respected pass rushers.

Keeping Crosby means Las Vegas retains the centerpiece of its defense while continuing to reshape the roster during free agency.

The Raiders have already been active, reportedly adding players such as Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, Kwity Paye, Tyler Linderbaum, and wide receiver Jalen Nailor.

The story may not be finished

Crosby remains under contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, and league insiders expect the team to evaluate its long-term plans before considering another trade scenario.

Blockbuster deals often resurface later in the offseason once teams reassess their roster needs.

For now, Crosby is still a Raider.

But the unusual chain of events in Baltimore has already turned this failed trade into one of the most talked-about stories of the NFL offseason.

Information in this article is based on reporting from The Athletic, comments from Dianna Russini on The Rich Eisen Show, and publicly reported NFL contract and statistical data from league coverage outlets including ESPN and Pro Football Reference.
