Mavericks fans demand GM’s Nico Harrison resignation after Doncic trade

Dallas Mavericks fans are heartbroken, there’s no doubt about it. The trade of their star guard, Luka Doncic, last Sunday has left a hole in their hearts and a burning question on their minds: What was Nico Harrison thinking? As the team prepared for their first home game since the seismic shift, the fans made their feelings crystal clear. Over an hour before tip-off against the Houston Rockets, a crowd gathered outside the American Airlines Center, ready to voice their displeasure.

The scene outside the arena was a testament to the fans’ devotion to Doncic and their frustration with the Mavericks’ front office. Signs bearing messages like “LOYALTY DIED #FIRENICO,” “LOYALTY FADED AWAY,” and “TRADE NICO” dotted the crowd. The chants of “Fire Nico!” echoed through the air, leaving no room for misinterpreting the fans’ sentiments. They were angry, they were disappointed, and they wanted General Manager Nico Harrison held accountable.

The source of their ire? The details of the trade itself. In what many perceive as a back-door deal with Los Angeles Lakers GM Rob Pelinka, Harrison traded Doncic, along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, to the Lakers. In return, the Mavericks received Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz were also involved, receiving Jalen Hood-Schifino from the Lakers, a 2025 Clippers second-round pick from the Lakers, and a 2025 second-round pick from the Mavericks.

The core of the fans’ anger stems from the belief that Dallas could have gotten a much better deal for Doncic if they had explored other options. Many argue that putting him on the open trade market would have sparked a bidding war, driving up the value and bringing in a much larger haul of talent and draft capital. The perception that Harrison settled for less than Doncic’s worth has fueled the flames of discontent and turned him into public enemy number one.

It’s easy to understand the fans’ perspective. Doncic was more than just a player; he was the face of the franchise, a generational talent, and a symbol of hope for the future. To see him traded away in what many consider to be an underwhelming deal has left them feeling betrayed and undervalued. The “Fire Nico” chants are a direct expression of their frustration and a demand for answers.

Whether Harrison’s decision will ultimately prove to be a stroke of genius or a colossal blunder remains to be seen. Only time will tell if the players and picks acquired in the trade will live up to the legacy of Luka Doncic. But for now, Nico Harrison finds himself in the hot seat, facing the wrath of a fan base that feels its loyalty has been misplaced.
