Matthew Stafford’s future in question as Rams explore trade options

Matthew Stafford‘s time with the Los Angeles Rams may be nearing its end, as reports indicate the team has granted him permission to engage in discussions with other franchises.

Despite the quarterback’s desire to remain in Los Angeles, the organization appears to be weighing its options regarding his long-term future. Since leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2022, Stafford has remained a key figure in the team’s offense.

However, with the veteran quarterback now 37 years old and carrying a hefty contract, the Rams are seemingly open to exploring potential trade opportunities.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Stafford has been given the green light to assess his market value and explore interest from other teams.

This development follows reports from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, who stated that Stafford’s inner circle believes he prefers to stay with the Rams and continue playing under head coach Sean McVay.

But, securing a new contract agreement that satisfies both sides could be a determining factor in whether he remains in Los Angeles.

While Stafford‘s on-field contributions remain valuable, external factors may also be influencing the Rams’ decision.

Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd suggested that frustrations within the organization extend beyond Stafford’s performance, citing public comments made by his wife, Kelly Stafford, regarding team decisions.

Kelly Stafford recently voiced her displeasure over reports that the Rams were considering trading wide receiver Cooper Kupp, one of Stafford’s closest teammates.

On her podcast, The Morning After, she addressed the rumors, stating: “My husband wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation. The trading away of Cooper-I’m confused because we were one play away from going to the NFC Championship. I think if we go, we win.”

Cowherd noted that the Rams were displeased with the way the situation was handled, explaining: “The Rams like Matt Stafford, but they’re tiring of the constant quarterback talk, his wife saying things publicly.

“They’re not real happy with Cooper Kupp going public with something they tried to keep quiet. They’re kind of over Cooper Kupp, and with that, a little bit Matt Stafford.”

Potential Destinations for Stafford

With the Rams assessing their options, speculation has already begun regarding where Stafford could land next. One team reportedly interested in acquiring him is the New York Giants, who hold the No.3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Cowherd believes the Giants are in a position where they need a proven quarterback to remain competitive, particularly with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen facing growing pressure to deliver results.

“The Giants do not like the quarterback draft class, and Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen have to win or they’ll be fired by Thanksgiving,” Cowherd stated. “So they are going to make a move, I believe, on Matt Stafford.”

If a trade materializes, the Rams would need to find a temporary replacement at quarterback. Cowherd speculated that Aaron Rodgers, who is now uncertain about his future with the New York Jets, could be a potential target for Los Angeles.

With offensive coordinator Michael LaFleur, the younger brother of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, already on the Rams’ coaching staff, Rodgers could be an intriguing short-term solution for the franchise.
