Matthew Stafford will have to break his friend Cooper Kupp heart if he wants to go to the Super Bowl again

Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams are one win away from returning to the Super Bowl, but standing in their way is a familiar and emotionally charged opponent.

The Rams will face the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday in the NFC Championship game at Lumen Field, marking the third meeting between the NFC West rivals this season and the second in Seattle.

The matchup carries added intrigue with the reunion of Stafford and wide receiver Cooper Kupp, key figures in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI title run who will now be on opposite sidelines. Kupp, now a Seahawk, built a close bond with Stafford during their time in Los Angeles, forming one of the league’s most productive quarterback-receiver connections. That relationship extended beyond the field, making this showdown particularly personal, with only one of them earning a chance to compete for a second Super Bowl ring while the other is left with a season-ending loss.

A tightly contested series

The NFC Championship game is scheduled for Sunday, January 25. The winner will advance to Super Bowl LX. For the Rams, a victory would send them to their third Super Bowl appearance under head coach Sean McVay in his nine seasons leading the franchise.

This season’s series between the teams has been tightly contested. Each team won at home, with both games decided in dramatic fashion. In Week 11, the Rams held off a late Seattle rally when Seahawks kicker Jason Myers missed a 61-yard field goal as time expired. In Week 16, the Seahawks responded with one of the season’s most memorable comebacks, erasing a 30-14 fourth-quarter deficit on Thursday Night Football. Seattle forced overtime, matched the Rams’ opening touchdown and then sealed the win with a successful two-point conversion.

Seattle dominated San Francisco

Seattle earned its spot in the NFC Championship game with a dominant 41-6 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Rashid Shaheed opened the game by returning the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and the Seahawks’ defense overwhelmed the 49ers by forcing three turnovers, including one interception and two fumbles. The performance underscored why Seattle finished the regular season 14-3 and claimed the NFC West title.

The division has proven to be one of the NFL’s strongest this year. Along with Seattle’s division-winning record, both the Rams and 49ers reached the playoffs at 12-5. It marked just the fourth time since 1970 that one division placed three teams among the league’s final eight, and now the NFC West accounts for two of the final four teams remaining.

The game also adds to Seattle’s history of success at this stage. This will be the fourth time the Seahawks have hosted a conference championship game, having previously done so after the 2005, 2013 and 2014 seasons, advancing to the Super Bowl on all three occasions.
