Another chapter of the Aaron Rodgers saga has come to an end. After several months of uncertainty, the legendary quarterback has finally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers to lead the offense for the upcoming season. It’s worth remembering that during this drawn-out process, he even considered retirement.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were desperate to sign Aaron Rodgers because they only had three quarterbacks on the roster – none of whom were of sufficient quality to compete in 2025, especially in a division that includes the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals, two clear favorites to battle for the AFC North title.
With Aaron Rodgers clearly set as the starter, Mason Rudolph would move down to second on the depth chart, and rookie Will Howard from Ohio State would be third. Skyler Thompson is also on the roster, but he’s likely to be cut before the season starts – it’s highly unlikely the team will keep four quarterbacks.
Mason Rudolph breaks his silence and talks about Aaron Rodgers
Mason Rudolph has been in the league for six years. Last season, he played with the Tennessee Titans but returned to the Steelers during this free agency. He’s had his chances and has shown some flashes of talent, but it was unlikely that he could carry Pittsburgh to contention in the AFC. That’s why the team pushed hard to sign Rodgers.
Still, it’s clear that Mason Rudolph will be the second quarterback on the depth chart, with a significant lead over the others. He recently commented on his new teammate and the competition that lies ahead in Pittsburgh.
“It won’t change my approach,” he said. “I’ll keep doing what I’ve done my entire career. I’ve faced a lot of adversity and have always found a way to push through. I stay ready to play well when called upon.”
Since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement in 2022, the Steelers have experimented with various options (Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph), but none have met expectations. Even with Rodgers, it’s likely that in the next offseason, Pittsburgh will still be active in the quarterback market.
Despite having a four-time NFL MVP at quarterback, the Steelers will need to go the extra mile to compete – though with Mike Tomlin as head coach, anything is possible, especially when they’ll be going up against Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow in the division, both of whom are strong MVP contenders.
