With the countdown underway for Inter Miami’s debut in the new 32-team Club World Cup in the United States, head coach Javier Mascherano took a moment to speak beyond tactics and formations.

In a pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Al-Ahly, the former Argentina captain spoke with Marca journalist Agustina Colobraro and had nothing but praise for Franco Mastantuono, the 17-year-old midfielder recently signed by Real Madrid.

“Franco has exceptional talent and surprising maturity for his age,” Mascherano said with admiration. The coach knows Mastantuono well from his time leading Argentina’s youth national teams, where he worked closely with the promising star.

Mastantuono, a rising star with a bright future

Mascherano didn’t just highlight Mastantuono’s technical skills-he also praised his mentality:

“What impressed me most wasn’t his ability on the ball, but his mindset-he competes like he’s 25. He’s hungry, humble, and understands what sacrifice means.”

The praise reflects not only Mastantuono’s potential, but also Mascherano’s evolving philosophy as a mentor.

Mascherano’s growth as a developer of young talent

During the press conference, the former midfielder also reflected on his transition from player to coach. “They have the ball now, and I don’t,” he joked, with a mix of humor and nostalgia. Still, he made it clear that his passion remains strong-now focused on educating, guiding, and nurturing the stars of tomorrow.

“The goal isn’t just for them to win matches, but to be prepared to handle pressure and expectations,” he said.

The Club World Cup will not only be a global showcase for Inter Miami, but also a key stage for Mascherano to solidify his profile as a coach who shapes talent. And while Franco Mastantuono begins writing his European journey, his first great mentor is watching closely-convinced that the young star is ready to shine on the world’s biggest stage.
