Mark Cuban Jokes with Bill Gates Over Luka Doncic Trade Comparison: “If They Traded Microsoft 11 for 10… What Would You Do?”

The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to send Luka Doncic to the Lakers is still causing ripples, and even Mark Cuban, the former majority owner, is weighing in. But in true Cuban style, he’s doing it with a touch of humor, even bringing Bill Gates into the conversation! It seems like even billionaires have strong opinions about basketball.

Cuban’s been pretty quiet since the trade went down, which is unusual for him. But he finally broke his silence during a chat with Bill Gates, and his analogy was pure gold. He admitted he’d had a “rough week,” which is understandable given the fan reaction. Then he posed this hilarious hypothetical to Gates, comparing the Doncic trade to a tech world shake-up.

Imagine this: After Gates left Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, the then-CEO, decided to trade Windows 11, the shiny new operating system, for the older but still popular Windows 10. That’s the kind of comparison Cuban drew, and it’s pretty spot-on. He asked Gates what he would do in that situation, and Gates’ response was priceless: “I might have to hide from the press.”

Cuban, never one to miss a beat, quipped that he knew a few other people in that situation, clearly referencing himself, which got a big laugh from the audience. It’s clear that even though he’s no longer the majority owner, Cuban still feels the sting of fan disappointment and understands the magnitude of the Doncic trade. He’s always had a close relationship with Luka, even traveling to watch him play for the Slovenian national team, so it’s safe to say this trade hits close to home.

The fallout from the trade has been intense, to say the least. Mavericks GM Nico Harrison has become the target of fan anger, with reports even surfacing of death threats. That’s way over the line, of course. Fans have been protesting outside the American Airlines Center, demanding Harrison’s resignation. They’re understandably upset about losing a player of Doncic’s caliber.

And to add insult to injury, Anthony Davis, the key player the Mavericks received in the trade, had a decent debut but then suffered an injury. This just poured gasoline on the fire of fan frustration. It’s a tough situation for the Mavericks, and it’ll be interesting to see how they navigate these choppy waters. One thing’s for sure: Mark Cuban’s humor, even in the midst of the storm, is a reminder that sometimes laughter is the best medicine.
