In addition to Julian Alvarez, who took the penalty, the other protagonist of the penalty shootout between Atletico and Real Madrid that went viral was Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, who, together with the VAR, decided that the goal was not valid, since the Atletico player had touched the ball with both feet. The referee referred to this incident onthe website Win Win, where he made it clear that it was he who first noticed the situation.

“Did Mbappe tell the referees that Alvarez touched it twice? That’s not true at all. I was the one who informed the VAR referees that there was a 99% chance of a double touch by Alvarez, and they checked it thoroughly,” said the Polish referee

I had never faced a situation like this in my refereeing career

Marciniak

“To be honest, I have never faced such a situation in my refereeing career, but the players know the rules,” Marciniak continued.

UEFA’s explanations

UEFA also published a statement at midday on Thursday to explain the action. According to the governing body of European soccer, although it was minimal, “the player made contact with the ball with his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Rule 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee to indicate that the goal should be disallowed”.

UEFA, as announced in the statement, will hold talks with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional.
