Manchester United are moving forward with plans to renovate their historic stadium in the Unied Kingdom, aiming to create a modern 100,000-seater arena while preserving the essence of Old Trafford for fans and players alike. The ambitious redevelopment project is intended to position the Premier League club to host major international events, including the Women’s World Cup Final in 2035.
It is aligning with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham‘s vision for the city, while also modernizing the matchday experience for supporters.
Despite unveiling designs at Foster + Partners in London over a year ago, progress has been gradual, raising questions about the project’s timeline. It is set to cost around £2billion ($2.68bn) to reconstruct.
CEO of stadium development Collette Roche insists that planning and funding discussions are ongoing, with the goal of submitting a planning application within the next 12 to 18 months.
Old Trafford, which opened in 1910, is already legendary, known as “The Theatre of Dreams.”
Its 74,000-seat capacity makes it the largest club soccer stadium in the UK, and its cantilevered roof and iconic red stands have hosted countless domestic, European, and international matches.
It has featured legendary players like Ryan Giggs, George Best, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The stadium has endured historical challenges, including serious wartime damage, yet each rebuilding effort has enhanced its resilience.

Modern renovations now blend historical charm with contemporary facilities, including hospitality suites, museums, and fan experiences, ensuring the venue remains a cultural landmark as well as a sporting one.
“Our plan is to be able to host other international sporting events and entertainment events,” Roche told MUTV on March 24.
“Andy Burnham, the mayor, said his ambition would be for us to host the final for the Women’s World Cup in 2035, so if we could pull that off, that would be incredible.
“We want to build a stadium that’s befitting of our past, but also fit for the future. We want to make sure we keep what’s important, the special memories that people have had…
“We need to create a new stadium that retains that essence – the match day routines, the emotion, the intimidating atmosphere for the away fans and make sure we build something really, really special.
“And we think we can do that through a 100,000-seater stadium.”
Challenges remain, including securing public funding, private investment, and additional land, particularly negotiations with Freightliner over the terminal behind Old Trafford. Roche confirmed that significant progress has been made privately, though details remain under wraps.
