The bond between Patrick Mahomes and his alma mater remains a powerful force in the NFL landscape, as evidenced by the three-time Super Bowl champion’s latest efforts at the scouting combine.
Mahomes, currently in the midst of a rigorous rehabilitation process, has reportedly set his sights on a fellow Texas Tech Red Raiders standout to bolster the Kansas City Chiefs‘ receiving corps.
During the on-field workouts in Indianapolis this Friday, wide receiver Reggie Virgil confirmed that the elite quarterback has already begun a subtle recruitment campaign to bring him to Arrowhead Stadium.
Virgil, who became a focal point of the Red Raiders‘ high-powered offense this past season, detailed a recent interaction that highlighted Mahomes‘ influence within the Chiefs‘ front office.
According to Virgil, the connection was facilitated through coaching staff members during his time at the Senior Bowl.
“[Playing with Mahomes] would be everything,” Virgil said.
“Him being a Tech guy too, I just know it, like, he reached out, was telling me like, I was at the Senior Bowl and it was his assistant quarterbacks coach.
“And he told his quarterbacks coach, ‘Virgil is a guy for sure.’ So, just knowing he thinks highly of me, already, it’s so cool. I would definitely learn a lot. Be a better player for sure.”
A historic Red Raider season meets Mahomes’ recovery timeline
The interest in Virgil comes after a historic 12-2 campaign for Texas Tech, where the program clinched its first Big 12 title in history with a 34-7 victory over BYU.
Virgil was a vital component of that success after transferring from Miami (OH), finishing his senior year with 57 receptions for 705 yards and six touchdowns.
While the Red Raiders ultimately fell to Oregon in the Orange Bowl, a College Football Playoff quarterfinal, Virgil‘s 6-foot-3 frame and deep-threat capability have made him a riser on draft boards.
Analysts currently project him as a potential mid-round steal who could provide Mahomes with the length and speed the Chiefs lacked during their difficult 2025 season.
For the Chiefs, the 2026 offseason is about more than just roster construction; it is about redemption. The 2025 season was an anomaly for the franchise, as they missed the playoffs for the first time since Mahomes became the starter, finishing with a 6-11 record.
The campaign was cut short in Week 15 when Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
