Mahomes breaks his silence in the playoffs with a move straight out of a video game by Caleb Williams

Trailing with the clock winding down in their NFC Divisional Round matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams pulled off a play that instantly became the talk of the NFL.

With the Bears facing a daunting deficit late in the fourth quarter, Williams dropped back and launched a low, backpedaling pass into the arms of tight end Cole Kmet for a game-tying touchdown that sent the contest into overtime and defied what many had thought possible.

The dramatic score, coming on a critical fourth-down play, sparked an uproar among fans and lit up social media as viewers tried to process the improbable sequence.

Current and former NFL players alike reacted to the completion, which energized the Soldier Field crowd and kept Chicago‘s postseason hopes alive.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted a reaction online to Williams‘ performance, using multiple laughing face emojis and writing “awesome!” on X.

Williams‘ late-game heroics capped a performance that was far from typical. Earlier in the contest, the Bears had struggled to consistently move the ball against the Rams‘ defensive fronts, but Chicago‘s quarterback never backed down.

The tying touchdown came at a moment when the Rams looked poised to escape with a win, a testament to the Bears‘ resilience and Williams‘ clutch instincts.

Dramatic second-half grind

Chicago’s road to tying this matchup had been an uphill climb. After falling behind in the fourth quarter, the Bears‘ offense found life with a mix of gritty running and timely passes.

D’Andre Swift‘s impact as both a runner and receiver helped keep drives alive, while Williams methodically worked to reestablish rhythm with his receivers.

That balance, which runs from Swift mixed with passes to DJ Moore and other targets, enabled Chicago to stay within striking distance.

The Bears‘ fourth-down decision late in the fourth wasn’t just a gutsy call; it reflected a team that had battled its way back into contention despite earlier setbacks in the game.

The Rams, for their part, executed well enough to lead late and looked poised to snuff out Chicago‘s hopes.

Los Angeles‘ defensive unit had contained Chicago‘s offense for much of the afternoon, forcing punts and limiting chunk plays. But when it mattered most, Williams delivered.

Williams‘ impact on Chicago‘s postseason narrative

Caleb Williams‘s journey to this moment has been one of rapid ascension after being the No. 1 overall pick and a former Heisman Trophy winner at Southern California.

Throughout the 2025 season, Williams has shown flashes of brilliance, especially in late-game situations, helping the Bears stay competitive in tight contests.

That tendency to engineer comebacks, compounded by his ability to make off-script throws under pressure, has defined Chicago‘s identity this postseason.

His performance against the Rams mirrors other late-game surges he’s executed, including playoff heroics earlier in the year.
