Mahomes and the Chiefs could end up drafting one of the best defenders in the Draft

The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2026 NFL Draft with more questions than usual, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. After losing several key contributors in the secondary and across the defense, Kansas City is in a position where it must find immediate-impact talent if it wants to remain a Super Bowl contender. One name that continues to surface as a potential solution is Caleb Downs, the standout safety from the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Downs is widely regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in the 2026 class, and his skill set aligns with what the Chiefs currently lack. Kansas City‘s secondary has taken a hit this offseason, with multiple cornerbacks departing through trades or free agency. That attrition has created a clear need for a versatile defensive back who can step in and contribute right away.

While much of the early draft speculation has focused on the Chiefs potentially targeting a wide receiver or even trading up for an edge rusher, the case for addressing the secondary is just as strong. With two first-round picks, general manager Brett Veach has the flexibility to approach the draft from multiple angles. Recent projections suggest the team could lean heavily toward defense, and Downs fits that approach as a player capable of elevating the unit immediately.

Downs could become a high-level safety

What makes Downs particularly appealing is his readiness. Unlike many prospects who require time to develop, he is viewed as someone who could become a high-level safety early in his career. His range, instincts, and ability to impact both the pass and run game make him a valuable piece in today’s NFL, where defensive backs are expected to do more than just cover.

For defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, a player like Downs could be a foundational addition. Spagnuolo‘s system relies on versatility and intelligence in the secondary, and Caleb has the profile of a player who can handle complex responsibilities while still making plays. Whether lining up deep, stepping into the box, or matching up in coverage, he offers the kind of flexibility that modern defenses demand.

The broader context is just as important. The Chiefs remain one of the league’s top contenders largely because of Patrick Mahomes, but sustaining that success requires balance. As the offense continues to evolve, the defense must keep pace, especially in a conference filled with high-powered attacks. Adding a player like Downs could help stabilize a unit that showed signs of vulnerability last season.

The Chiefs are analyzing the potential impact

There is also the reality that Kansas City cannot address every need at once. The temptation to prioritize edge rush or offensive weapons will be there, especially after acquiring running back Kenneth Walker in free agency. But the secondary’s current state makes it difficult to ignore the potential impact of a player like Downs.

If the Chiefs are looking for a defender who can contribute immediately and grow into a cornerstone piece, Caleb stands out as one of the best options available. His arrival would not only address a critical weakness but also reinforce the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.

For a franchise with championship expectations, the margin for error is small. Selecting the right defensive piece in the first round could be the difference between staying in contention and taking a step back. Caleb Downs may be exactly the kind of player who helps ensure Kansas City remains in the hunt for another Super Bowl.
