Mac Jones, after his great game with the San Francisco 49ers, sent a strong message to Brock Purdy: things could get interesting

This week, the San Francisco 49ers received some bad news following their Week 1 victory over theSeattle Seahawks, due to injuries to key offensive players, including George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy. In Purdy’s case, he injured his big toe and will be out of action for 2 to 5 weeks.

After the news, head coach Kyle Shanahan immediately announced that Mac Jones would be the quarterback. Signed during the preseason free agency, and as expected from a quarterback under Shanahan, the Alabama product and 2021 first-round pick had an excellent game.

Against the New Orleans Saints, Mac Jones completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and, most importantly, threw 3 touchdown passes to three different players: Juan Jennings, Christian McCaffrey, and Luke Ferrell. This is positive for the 49ers, as Jones performed well amid the uncertainty surrounding Purdy’s injury.

Mac Jones said he has worked a lot on his mindset

Mac Jones’ NFL career has gone from highs to lows, and now, with this opportunity with the San Francisco 49ers and a head coach who knows how to handle quarterbacks, he knows it could be a major chance to straighten out his path in this demanding league.

“I’ve worked a lot on my mindset this offseason. The line did a great job blocking for me, and when they do, I know I can stay in there and throw the ball,” Mac Jones said in a press conference after the 49ers’ victory over the Saints.

Remember, Jones was a first-round pick in 2021 by the New England Patriots. In his first year, he led them to the playoffs, but then struggled due to a poor environment. He was sent to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, and now life has given him a big opportunity with the 49ers.

At least, Mac Jones will start next week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals at home, marking the 49ers’ 2025 debut at Levi’s Stadium. Keep in mind that Brock Purdy signed a 5-year, $265 million contract extension, so Jones, with his performances, will look to give Shanahan some tough decisions.
