Luka Doncic suffers the possible departure of Maxi Kleber in the Lakers’ plan for Andrew Wiggins

It’s a reality: the Los Angeles Lakers remain in “win-now” mode, and their front office is working at full speed to address key weaknesses. The arrival of Deandre Ayton at the center position adds solidity, Marcus Smart brings experience and defense, while Jake LaRavia adds versatility on the perimeter. Additionally, LeBron James will stay for one more season with a $52.6 million contract, but the focus is on Luka Doncic, who has taken on the leading role in Los Angeles. Now, the front office is looking to secure a key piece: Andrew Wiggins.

According to Jovan Buha and Eric Pincus, the Lakers are considering a three-team trade to acquire Wiggins. The proposal involves the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets, with Rui Hachimura, Dalton Knecht, and Gabe Vincent as trade assets. Wiggins, with $28.2 million guaranteed this season and a $30.2 million option for 2026-27, would arrive in Los Angeles along with Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Drew Timme.

Miami would receive Hachimura, Knecht, and a $10 million trade exception, while Brooklyn would absorb Maxi Kleber and receive a 2026 second-round pick plus $2 million. A complex adjustment of salaries, picks, and exceptions that would allow the Lakers to strengthen their perimeter with a proven defender.

Luka Doncic and the departure of Maxi Kleber

The big problem for Doncic is that this move would leave him without one of his closest teammates. Maxi Kleber has been with him since his early years in Dallas, forming a trusted duo on and off the court. The chemistry between them was one of the pillars of the trade that brought Doncic to Los Angeles in February 2025, when the Mavericks traded Anthony Davis in return.

Losing Kleber is not just a sporting adjustment-it’s an emotional blow for Doncic. The German has been an essential part of his development in the NBA, and his departure could leave a difficult-to-fill personal void.

Wiggins as the Lakers’ defensive bet

With an average of 18 points and 37.4% from three last season, Wiggins is the type of forward the Lakers need. His size (6’7″) and ability to stop top perimeter players make him an immediate reinforcement to compete in the West. Additionally, Jaime Jaquez could revive his career after a tough second year in Miami, while Timme would offer depth in the rotation.

The dilemma is clear: the Lakers can strengthen their defense and depth in pursuit of a championship, but the price would be breaking the Doncic-Kleber partnership. Wiggins promises immediate impact, but Los Angeles will have to weigh whether the ambition for a title justifies testing the loyalty and bonds that keep their star happiest.
