Luka Doncic steps into a mentor role guiding Bronny James with his best tricks

The Los Angeles Lakers returned to the win column in emphatic fashion this week, snapping a frustrating three-game skid that had threatened to derail their early 2026 momentum. Playing the second night of a demanding back-to-back, the Lakers dismantled the Atlanta Hawks with a 141-116 victory that was never truly in doubt. Leading the charge was the ageless LeBron James, who at 41 years old finished just one rebound shy of a triple-double, posting a game-high 31 points and 10 assists. Not to be outdone, league scoring leader Luka Doncic orchestrated the offense with clinical precision, contributing 27 points and 12 assists to push the Lakers’ record to 24-14, keeping them firmly planted in the Western Conference’s top five.

Luka Doncic Holds Pre-Game Master Clinic for Bronny

While Atlanta arrived in Los Angeles riding a three-game winning streak following the high-profile trade of Trae Young to Washington, they were quickly overwhelmed by a Lakers offense that seemed to find its rhythm from the opening tip. The halftime score of 81-60 marked the highest-scoring half for the Lakers all season, almost effectively ending the contest before the third quarter even began.

However, the most talked-about moment of the night happened before the lights even went up for the starters. During warmups, the hardwood briefly transformed into a soccer pitch as Luka Doncic, Bronny James, and Maxi Kleber engaged in a high-level display of footwork and ball control.

Doncic, whose deep-rooted passion for soccer stems from his legendary tenure with Real Madrid, took center stage as a mentor, teaching Bronny and Kleber advanced tricks to help them prepare for the atmosphere of the upcoming FIFA World Cup this summer. It was a rare glimpse into the camaraderie between the league’s brightest star and the young James, though that chemistry didn’t translate to much floor time for Bronny during the actual game.

The younger James saw only four minutes of action and failed to score, a stark contrast to the previous night in Sacramento where he managed two triples, notably outperforming his father in that specific category for the first time. It remains a challenging sophomore season for Bronny, who continues to split his time between J.J. Redick’s rotation and the G League to find his footing.

LeBron James Keeps Defying Father Time

If there were any concerns about how a 41-year-old would handle the physical toll of a back-to-back schedule, LeBron James silenced them within the first quarter. Displaying a level of conditioning that continues to defy modern medicine, James looked like the fastest player on the floor, attacking the rim for multiple dunks and finishing with his second-highest scoring total of the season. Beyond the box score, James continued to showcase the “23 NBA Seasons” patch on his jersey, a unique recognition from the league for being the only player to ever reach such a milestone.

The patch features a silhouette of his iconic chalk toss and colors representing the three franchises he has carried to titles: Cleveland, Miami, and Los Angeles. The ritual surrounding this specific piece of equipment has become a fascination for collectors; the Lakers equipment staff removes the patch after every game to be authenticated and embedded into ultra-rare Topps trading cards. It is a fitting tribute to a player who seems determined to rewrite every longevity record in the book before he finally calls it a career.
