Luka Doncic reflects on Michael Jordan’s lasting impact on his game

Big seasons bring big questions, and forLuka Doncic, the 2025-26 NBA campaign represents a defining stretch of his career. Championship expectations follow him everywhere, but so does the responsibility of carrying a global brand. Doncic has reached a point where performance, image, and legacy all move in the same direction.

That balance did not happen overnight. When Doncic entered the league, he quickly became one of basketball’s most marketable young stars. Shoe companies lined up. The usual giants made their pitches, knowing the value of locking in a generational talent early. But Doncic took a different path, one shaped as much by emotion as strategy.

In 2019, he signed with Jordan Brand, becoming the first European athlete to represent the label. For Doncic, it was not just about sneakers. It was about aligning with a legacy he had admired since childhood, built by a player who redefined competitiveness in the NBA.

I grew up idolizing MJ… I idolized the way he played, his competitiveness

A mindset forged by Michael Jordan

Now a key piece of the Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic is preparing to release the fifth model of his signature shoe. The Luka 5s are scheduled to hit shelves on January 8, 2026, and the guard has begun promoting what he calls his most personal design yet.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Doncic explained that the shoe reflects how he moves and thinks on the court. Quick changes of speed, sharp cuts, and constant balance were priorities during development. It is footwear built around control rather than flash.

During that same conversation, Doncic addressed the influence of Michael Jordan. He spoke about growing up watching Jordan, studying his competitiveness, and absorbing the mentality that winning is not situational but constant. That mindset, Doncic said, still guides him today.

It’s about keeping that winning mindset in everything I do

The connection feels natural. Doncic has built a reputation as one of the league’s most relentless competitors, capable of taking over games with patience and precision. His earlier signature models coincided with some of the most productive stretches of his career, reinforcing the belief that comfort and confidence matter.

As expectations rise and the Luka 5 arrives, Doncic is not just honoring a legend. He is continuing a philosophy. Compete every possession, trust your preparation, and never separate performance from purpose.
