The NBA has officially fined Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic $50,000 for what the league described as an “inappropriate and unprofessional gesture” directed toward a game official.
The discipline stems from an incident during the third quarter of the Lakers’ 110-97 victory over the New York Knicks on Sunday. With 4:35 remaining in the period, Doncic attempted to draw a charge on Knicks forward Mohamed Diawara.
When the call went against him as a blocking foul, a frustrated Doncic rubbed his fingers together while still on the floor-a gesture widely interpreted as suggesting the official had been paid off.
“James Jones, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations, announced the fine today,” the NBA stated in its official release. The league’s swift action marks yet another chapter in Doncic’s increasingly contentious relationship with officiating this season.
The suspension tightrope
The $50,000 penalty isn’t the only concern for the Lakers’ front office. Doncic has now accumulated 15 technical fouls this season. Under NBA rules, his next technical foul will trigger an automatic one-game suspension.
Doncic addressed the mounting tension after the game, expressing frustration over what he perceives as a lack of consistency. “Just because I yelled at him I guess,” Doncic said.
