Luka Doncic is officially cleared to take the floor for the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night against the Detroit Pistons after the NBA rescinded his 16th technical foul of the season.
The league’s decision on Sunday saves the Lakers’ superstar from an automatic one-game suspension, which would have been triggered by the technical he received during Saturday night’s narrow victory over the Orlando Magic.
The foul occurred late in the third quarter after a heated exchange at the free-throw line between Doncic and Magic center Goga Bitadze.
While the officials originally assessed a double technical, the Lakers filed an immediate appeal to the league office, hoping to keep their star available for their upcoming road stint.
A war of words and a language barrier
The details behind the altercation suggest that Bitadze may have crossed a line that the officiating crew simply didn’t understand.
Following the postgame press conference, Doncic revealed that Bitadze directed a highly personal insult at him in Serbian, threatening his family in a way that “referees obviously didn’t pick up on” due to the language barrier.
I ultimately needed to stand up for myself instead of taking that kind of over-the-line trash talk.
Doncic noted that the referee only saw his reactionary response, rather than the initial provocation.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Doncic has successfully navigated the suspension threshold; he reached 16 technical fouls twice during his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, only to have the 16th call rescinded in both instances.
Kennard’s heroics preserve the nine-game streak
Despite the distractions and a difficult shooting night in the second half, where he went 2-for-13 from the field and missed all seven of his three-point attempts, Doncic still managed to anchor the Lakers with 33 points and eight assists.
However, the night belonged to the team’s resilience and a last-second“miracle” at the Kia Center. For the first time in weeks, the Lakers found themselves pushed to the brink of defeat.
The team’s nine-game winning streak was ultimately saved by Luke Kennard, whose clutch bucket lifted Los Angeles to a dramatic 105-104 win over the Magic.
With the technical foul now wiped from the record, the Lakers head to Detroit with their momentum intact and their full arsenal available as they look to extend their streak to double digits.
