Luis Suárez is ashamed of the image he has presented to his children and apologizes for spitting

Luis Suarez was once again at the center of controversy after the 2025 Leagues Cup final, where Inter Miami lost 3-0 to Seattle Sounders. After the final whistle, the Uruguayan striker confronted Gene Ramirez, a member of Seattle’s staff, and ended up spitting at him, despite the attempts of his teammate Oscar Ustari to calm him down.

Days later, Suarez broke his silence through a statement on Instagram, where he acknowledged that his reaction was unacceptable: “I want to apologise for my behaviour at the end of the match. It was a moment of great tension and frustration, but that does not justify the reaction I had. I was wrong and I sincerely regret it”.

Recognition of their mistakes

The striker, who has already been involved in other controversies throughout his career, acknowledged that the episode does not represent the image he wants to give either as a footballer or as a family role model. “It is not the image I want to give either in front of my family, who suffer because of my mistakes, or in front of my club, who do not deserve to be affected by something like this,” he said.

Suarez also stressed that his attitude directly affects Inter Miami, the institution that trusted him as one of its great figures. The striker expressed his regret for exposing the club at a negative time after the defeat in the final.

Reactions on social media and in the media

The gesture was heavily criticised by former footballers and analysts, including Alexi Lalas, who called the action “vile” and called for exemplary punishment. On social media, the pressure for MLS to impose a punishment was not long in coming, recalling similar incidents with other players that led to suspensions.

With this message, Suarez is trying to turn the page, although it is up to the league to determine whether there will be sporting sanctions. The Uruguayan, at 38 years of age, remains one of the great stars of MLS, but with this new scandal he adds another stain to a career that is both brilliant and controversial in equal measure.
