US justice has imposed a $500,000 bail on Dominican baseball player Luis Ortiz, a Cleveland Guardians pitcher, who was arrested on Sunday for a betting scandal.
Ortiz appeared before a federal court in Boston after an investigation dismantled a rigged betting system in which the Guardians player was involved along with his teammate and compatriot Emmanuel Clase.
According to investigations announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, Clase and Ortiz provided bettors with advance notice of the types of pitches they would make and would intentionally throw balls instead of strikes to ensure successful bets.
This system of corruption, according to the prosecutor’s office, caused at least $400,000 in profits for the gamblers.
The judge granted Ortiz bail but ordered him to surrender his passport, reduce his travel to the Northeast and have no contact with potential victims or witnesses.
